Where to elope in Washington State

Washington State is home to some of the most incredible National Parks and Forests. Each location has something unique to offer depending on what you want to prioritize for your Washington elopement.

Here’s a breakdown of some of our favorite places to elope in Washington

Olympic National Park

Ideal for couples who

  • Are nature enthusiasts that want to explore diverse landscapes including lush rainforests, rugged coastlines, and unbelievable mountains.

  • Want accessibility options and locations that are gorgeous without a ton of effort.

Mount Rainier National Park

Ideal for couples who

North Cascades

Washington's National Forests

Ideal for couples who

Ideal for couples who

  • Are looking for something a little more on the wild side. The North Cascades are PERFECT for couples that are drawn to the rugged wilderness, are craving adventures that are more remote and offer up more options for challenging hikes that lead you to mirror-like alpine lakes, panoramic vistas of snowy peaks, and emerald green forests.

  • For couples that are truly seeking privacy, a North Cascades elopement can offer up more privacy than other national parks.

  • Are avid adventurers and are drawn to an experience that allows them to be completely immersed in rugged terrain, remote trails, and a truly wild experience.

  • Crave privacy and are drawn to the remoteness that National Forests can offer.

eloping in Washington State |  Embracing the Seasons

Eloping in Washington State in Fall:

Mid- September - mid October

PROS:

  • Gorgeous colors…I mean, it’s insanely gorgeous.

  • Less crowds than summer, but you can anticipate some leaf peepers especially during Larch Madness (late September-early October).

THE CHALLENGES:

  • Unpredictable weather. As you move further into the fall season, the weather can absolutely change on a dime. It could be sunny with views of the mountains, or it could be super moody. You’ll want to give yourselves some flexibility here and book some extra days at your lodging and be ready to embrace backup plans.

What season is best? Here are our thoughts.

Early Fall is the best season for Washington elopements. You can still get to the mountains, the colors are stunning, and the crowds have thinned.

Spring is the best for Olympic, specifically before memorial day. Forests are lush and it's not crowded yet. The mountains are gross in the spring, so wait until Summer when the wildflowers start popping off (along with the crowds).

Winter is stunning, but you'll have fewer options available to you.

eloping in Washington State in winter

Late November - February

PROS:

  • Gorgeous winter wonderland vibes
  • Fewer crowds compared to the summer seasons

CHALLENGES:

  • Winter's mood swings are no joke. Flexibility is key here!
  • Many areas are inaccessible and you’ll want to keep an eye on road closures, but don’t stress! We gotchu with the back up plans.

eloping in Washington State in Spring:

 May - Early June

PROS:

  • A quieter time to explore with less crowds
  • Lush greenery
  • WIldflowers in lower elevation areas (Juneish)

CHALLENGES:

  • Obvi,  weather can be challenging here. Our best advice is to embrace the mood, stay flexible, and keep an open mind.
  • This is the WORST season for the mountains. They are still covered in snow that's beginning to melt and are generally not cute.

eloping in Washington State in Summer

July - Early September

PROS:

  • Gorgeous weather
  • Open roads

CHALLENGES:

  • Crowds - Everyone is out to explore the beautiful scenery
  • Wildfires - Keep backup plans in mind!

3 biggest mistakes couples make when planning their washington elopement

LET'S MAKE IT HAPPEN

#2 Choosing the wrong season for your priorities

Can't tell ya how many couples each year reach out for a wildflower elopement in May or June in Rainier. Most mountain locations will be snow-covered into July. We always help our couples pick the right season where their location can really shine and line up with their priorities.

#3 Booking lodging before landing on a location

Decide on your location BEFORE you book your stay. Just because a town is close to Mount Rainier, doesn't mean that it's close to the side of Mount Rainier you'll be exploring. Wait until you firm up the general area, at least before booking. Our planning process walks you through locations first, then we share lodging that will get you as close as possible and is available for your dates.

#1 Choosing a location based soley on Pinterest or Instagram

Locations look vastly different in each season. Hell, some you can only access in the summer months. If you're seeing locations blowing up on the socials, you can also bet money that the crowds are gonna pop off.  As folks who have been exploring the PNW for almost a decade, living as locals near each National Park, and driving up just about every NF road, let us show you the best spots you won't find on Google.

How to elope in washington state | the legal stuff

While the paperwork aspect is less than thrilling, we'll make it pretty painless! Here's an overhead view of the legal bits we'll guide you through

Permits:

You’ll likely need to apply for a special use permit for your Washington elopement . This permit allows you to use public lands for your ceremony. Each park is different when it comes to how they handle permits, and regulations can change each year.

Our tips for Special use permits:

  • Apply as early as you can. The permit process can take a while and you don’t want to be left scrambling.
  • Print your permit out, or send it to us so we can have it on-hand during your elopement day.
  • Don’t skip applying for a permit because you don’t think anyone will check for it. Trust us, they will

We keep tabs on all of this and walk our couples through the permit process. While you'll likely have to submit your permit yourself (varies by area), we'll walk you through filling it out and submitting it. We'll also contact permit offices on your behalf.

Washington State Marriage License

The marriage license aspect of an elopement can feel confusing to some folks (especially if you're out of state), but it’s really pretty easy. Sam is ordained and has walked plenty of couples through the process of getting their Washington marriage license taken care of with ease.  Here's an overview to relieve the overwhelm.

Washington State Marriage License requirements:

  • You’ll need two witnesses (Yup, we’re happy to sign!)

  • You’ll need an officiant (Yup, Sam is ordained)

  • You’ll need to observe the 3 day waiting period

  • Your license is valid anywhere in the state of Washington for 60 days

Getting your Washington Marriage

  • Apply online and pick up your license when you arrive in Washington state.

  • Apply by, and receive, your marriage license  through the mail. Not every county offers this, but some do and it can be a great option for folks that are out of state. Apply through King County for the easiest mail-in experience

Your answers to the questions can serve as the foundation for “planning anchor”. Come back to it if you start getting lost in the planning process, or feel pressure for your day to look or feel a certain way.

Q’s to ask yourself to start getting clear on the vibes

To plan an epic day, you gotta  get crystal clear about what you want, and what you don’t want.

For example: if hiking isn’t your bag, you don’t need to be trekking miles uphill in your wedding attire no matter how epic the view is. We promise you, there are other options (we have an entire spreadsheet full of 'em).

The last thing we want is for you to spend a day that didn’t make you feel inspired, excited, and absolutely overwhelmed with joy.

Well, not on our watch

TBH, this is the most important part of planning your elopement. It can be sooo easy to get totally wrapped up in what you see on social media and opt for locations, attire, details, and activities that don’t actually align with you - then you end up having a day that was really cool and beautiful, but also… kinda meh.

Defining Your Vision for your washington elopement

Q: Imagine your perfect day together. What does the setting look like? Do you have 360 views of the mountains? Are you nestled in a forest? Do you have a waterfall gushing beside you? How do you feel in that moment?

Q: How did you get there? Was it a drive up and frolic around situation, or were you putting in some miles? Driving up a bumpy NF road, or hopping on a sea-plane?

Q: What specific elements, activities, or surroundings would make your day in Washington truly unforgettable?

Example: Whale watching in the olympic Peninsula, a hot air balloon ride over Mount Rainier, Watching the sunrise paint the North Cascades, stargazing on a rugged beach, a gentle walk through the rainforest, chasing waterfalls framed by moss and ferns.

eloping in washington | where to stay

Where you stay is more than just a place to crash and throw on your wedding attire; it’s an important component of your narrative, an extension of your chosen vibe, and the backdrop for important moments of your elopement.

Your lodging can also serve as a backup location in moodier months, giving you a beautiful and cozy backdrop for a snuggle session, a candle-lit dinner, or other sweet moments.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Don't book your lodging until after you've selected your locations. This will save you so much drive time.
  • Don't choose a boring ass stay!! Choose somewhere that excites you, and where you can see moments of your day unfolding.
  • Check the fine print and make sure photography is allowed. Some places are really weird about this.

Choose a lodging space that echoes that desired aesthetic, where the morning light softly dances through the windows, and every corner reflects the love and anticipation of the day can elevate those sweet behind-the-scenes moments like getting ready.

Don't choose a boring stay.

When you book with us, we'll include lodging recommendations that fit the vibe you're after, and check ahead of time to make sure they're available for your dates.

How to Elope in Washington State | Crafting a chill Timeline

Questions to ask yourself:

Q: What pace do you envision for when you elope in Washington State? Slow and relaxed? Action-packed and exciting? A mixture of both?

Q: Would you benefit more from one day or two for your Washington elopement?

Q: What activities do you want to be sure to include in your day?

Q: Would you prefer your ceremony earlier in the day, or later?

You’ll want to make sure your elopement timeline has enough room to explore without feeling rushed and build in plenty of chill time so you aren’t burnt out at the end of your day.

Even if you’re planning a super chill fun, laid back time, you’ll absolutely benefit from a well-crafted timeline. It’s the secret sauce to a relaxed day that allows you to soak in all those little moments.

Your timeline will:

  • Lay out the flow for your day and bring structure to the chill vibes

  • Help you coordinate with other vendors

  • Answer questions for your guests

  • Ensure you’re taking advantage of the best light for your chosen locations.
