Eloping in Washington State in Fall:
Mid- September - mid October
- Gorgeous colors…I mean, it’s insanely gorgeous.
- Less crowds than summer, but you can anticipate some leaf peepers especially during Larch Madness (late September-early October).
- Unpredictable weather. As you move further into the fall season, the weather can absolutely change on a dime. It could be sunny with views of the mountains, or it could be super moody. You’ll want to give yourselves some flexibility here and book some extra days at your lodging and be ready to embrace backup plans.
What season is best? Here are our thoughts.
Early Fall is the best season for Washington elopements. You can still get to the mountains, the colors are stunning, and the crowds have thinned.
Spring is the best for Olympic, specifically before memorial day. Forests are lush and it's not crowded yet. The mountains are gross in the spring, so wait until Summer when the wildflowers start popping off (along with the crowds).
Winter is stunning, but you'll have fewer options available to you.

- Winter's mood swings are no joke. Flexibility is key here!

- Obvi, weather can be challenging here. Our best advice is to embrace the mood, stay flexible, and keep an open mind.
- This is the WORST season for the mountains. They are still covered in snow that's beginning to melt and are generally not cute.

#2 Choosing the wrong season for your priorities
Can't tell ya how many couples each year reach out for a wildflower elopement in May or June in Rainier. Most mountain locations will be snow-covered into July. We always help our couples pick the right season where their location can really shine and line up with their priorities.
#3 Booking lodging before landing on a location
Decide on your location BEFORE you book your stay. Just because a town is close to Mount Rainier, doesn't mean that it's close to the side of Mount Rainier you'll be exploring. Wait until you firm up the general area, at least before booking. Our planning process walks you through locations first, then we share lodging that will get you as close as possible and is available for your dates.
#1 Choosing a location based soley on Pinterest or Instagram
Locations look vastly different in each season. Hell, some you can only access in the summer months. If you're seeing locations blowing up on the socials, you can also bet money that the crowds are gonna pop off. As folks who have been exploring the PNW for almost a decade, living as locals near each National Park, and driving up just about every NF road, let us show you the best spots you won't find on Google.

Permits:
You’ll likely need to apply for a special use permit for your Washington elopement . This permit allows you to use public lands for your ceremony. Each park is different when it comes to how they handle permits, and regulations can change each year.
Our tips for Special use permits:
- Apply as early as you can. The permit process can take a while and you don’t want to be left scrambling.
- Print your permit out, or send it to us so we can have it on-hand during your elopement day.
- Don’t skip applying for a permit because you don’t think anyone will check for it. Trust us, they will
We keep tabs on all of this and walk our couples through the permit process. While you'll likely have to submit your permit yourself (varies by area), we'll walk you through filling it out and submitting it. We'll also contact permit offices on your behalf.
Washington State Marriage License
The marriage license aspect of an elopement can feel confusing to some folks (especially if you're out of state), but it’s really pretty easy. Sam is ordained and has walked plenty of couples through the process of getting their Washington marriage license taken care of with ease. Here's an overview to relieve the overwhelm.
Washington State Marriage License requirements:
- You’ll need two witnesses (Yup, we’re happy to sign!)
- You’ll need an officiant (Yup, Sam is ordained)
- You’ll need to observe the 3 day waiting period
- Your license is valid anywhere in the state of Washington for 60 days
Getting your Washington Marriage
- Apply online and pick up your license when you arrive in Washington state.
- Apply by, and receive, your marriage license through the mail. Not every county offers this, but some do and it can be a great option for folks that are out of state. Apply through King County for the easiest mail-in experience
