Your Local Planning Guide to a Mount Baker Elopement

We know you’re here because you’ve seen the Artist Point elopements fill up your Pinterest feed. And, yeah, it’s stunning, but on a summer evening, it looks more like a crowded wedding expo with no less than 3 other eloping couples all vying for the same viewpoint.

And, if you're already thinking about eloping at Mount Baker, we already know you want something different, and you want something private.

Because you didn't ditch the traditional wedding to plan an elopement in front of the same viewpoint as everyone else with massive crowds around you.

You want huge mountain views, an experience that feels like an actual adventure, and you don’t want to say your vows in front of a million people that are waiting for you to wrap it up so they can snap a pic in front of the view, too.

Mount Baker is one of the top locations to elope in Washington because you can:
  1. Build a wedding day around any version of adventure you have.
  2. Get CrAzY views with as little or as much effort as you can imagine.
  3. Find plenty of privacy to feel fully immersed in the experience and landscape.

You can hike 12 miles for a massive alpine view, you can roll up to a mountain overlook at sunrise, you can spend time out on the water, or driving up wild 4x4 roads, or enjoying a meal created by a private chef looking out at a view, or a combo of it all.

The trick here is figuring out the version of a Mount Baker elopement that is actually going to make the two of you look at each other at the end of the day and think:

Damn. We really DID that.

If you’re thinking, wow! This place really has it all, you’d be right.

BUT, as locals, we’ll be the first to tell you that there are some misconceptions, logistics, and quirks that you’ll definitely want to consider as you plan.

Rather listen to the highlights instead of reading this beast?

The Best Mount Baker
Elopement Locations
(and the ones we’d skip)

Pretty views don’t necessarily equate an incredible experience. So, let’s get one thing out of the way. It’s true, Mount baker has some of the most ridiculous mountain views in the lower 48.

But, not every beautiful spot makes a great elopement ceremony location. And yes, we’re talking specifically about eloping at Artist Point.

Because when we're helping you decide where to explore on your elopement day, we're not JUST thinking about pretty views.

We're thinking about the experience you want, how much privacy you need, how much effort you actually want to put in, what else you want to include in your day, and how each location changes with the seasons and time of day.

Here are the spots we'd choose, the ones we'd use strategically, and if you should skip it depending on what you want your day to feel like.

Artist Point

Everyone wants an Artist Point elopement, and we get it. The views are absolutely insane, and it is SO EASY to get to. We’re talking maybe 1.5 miles roundtrip for crazy views of Baker and Shuskan, and you could probably do it in Crocs if you wanted to, Sam does it in Chacos.

But as a ceremony location? We have our qualms.

You will absolutely see at least 3 other couples eloping here at sunset, and they will all be at the same spots on the trail. And while you can spread out, there just really isn’t any privacy here.

And sunset is especially busy because, well, EVERYONE wants to watch sunset from Artist Point. So, this is a great spot for portraits, but we really advise against it for a ceremony, or any elements of your day that you want privacy for. Otherwise, make Artist Point part of your wedding day rather than making it the place where your most important moments happen.

However, if you're dead set on saying your vows at Artist Point, we have the expertise to make sure you avoid the heavy crowds and have those staggering views.

You came here for the experience. Let's make sure you don't sacrifice it to get the photo, we promise there’s no shortage of incredible locations here.

 Picture Lake

Outside of that, make this more of a place you check out if you don't see any other cars parked by it.

This is a great spot under really specific circumstances.
  1. It's just the two of you and you’re making it more of a pitstop
  2. You're comfortable with exploring at sunrise
  3. You want a spot that is extremely easy to access
  4. You're getting married at Mount Baker outside of the summer season

TBH, our couples rarely choose this as a location because it tends to be on the crowded side and lacks room to really spread out.

It's pretty. Obviously. But it's small, it's popular, and you can get a much more interesting Mount Baker experience in other places.

Heather Meadows

Love it! You can basically roll into the parking lot and immediately have a ridiculous amount of scenery without making everyone work very hard for it.

You've got Bagley Lakes below you, mountains above you, wildflowers in summer, color in the fall, sapphire lakes, alpine scenery, and a bunch of different places we can explore depending on what kind of day you’re building.

There are so many places to spread out here, and it feels like there is so much variety in one central spot.

At sunrise, in the summer you’ll have gorgeous alpine glow on table mountain, and in the early evening the light gets really lovely here.

This location works especially well if a group is joining you for your ceremony since many viewpoints are easy to access,

Bigger Hikes and Lesser Known Corners of Mount Baker

When a couple tells us they’re wanting to put in some miles for their day, we can’t help but smile because Mount Baker is home to our absolute favorite trails.

The best way to get the mountain to yourself is to go where the crowds won’t.

If privacy and a sense of adventure is a big part of why you’re choosing a Mount Baker elopement, these are the locations for you!

Many hikes in the Mount Baker area, like Chain Lakes, will take you through wildflower meadows, alpine lakes, and HUGE mountain views. You’ll have insane landscapes to explore without a ton of folks around.

Some of our favorites are so far off the beaten path you likely won’t see another soul on your elopement day (except for some marmots and mountain goats).

4x4 Roads with Epic Views & Fire Lookouts

Some of the best views in Mount Baker can be found after driving an hour up a bumpy NF road and putting in some miles. One of our favorite firetower locations is an adventure to get to and 10000% worth it.

You could even camp overnight in a firetower and share private vows as the sun rises over 360 mountain views. Is there a better way to get married?!?! Probably not!

Remember, any time you add layers of difficulty to a location, you also add layers of privacy. While these places obviously take more time and effort to get to, they definately reward you with epic views and one helluva story to tell.

Backpacking Locations

Backpacking central, babyyy!! If you want an incredible backpacking elopement, there is hardly a better place than the Mount Baker area.

Our favorite time of year to backpack here is early fall, just after Labor Day. The crowds have cleared out, the weather is sublime, and there’s such a beautiful mix of late wildflowers mixed with pops of early fall color.

There are trails like Lake Ann, that are popular and offer up stunning views, but there are also a ton that are off the beaten path that will also give you some privacy with your adventure!

When to elope at Mount Baker
 (& the season we hate)

When to elope
at Mount Baker
 (& the season we hate)

We’ll be super honest, spring sucks here. It’s muddy, gross, and just meh. Things really don’t start to shine here until late July.

Each season has its own benefits and challenges (except for spring, it’s just all challenges). Here’s what you can expect for each season, and which is best for your type of Mount Baker elopement.

Late July - early September

Truly incredible. The views are great, the weather is predictable, and hiking conditions are stellar. The days are also long, which is perfect if you want a day where you get to really experience everything Mount Baker has to offer.

Wildflowers typically peak in August and stay through the beginning of September.

The challenges here are with crowds and watching the wildfires. Mercifully, the western slopes of the Cascades tend to see less wildfires and smoke than the eastern side, but through August, haze can obscure views. Luckily, the marine push from the Puget Sound typically helps to push the smoke east and it rarely stays.

Fall: September - Early/Mid- October

The fall season is SHORT, but damn it’s good! Depending on weather patterns, you can start seeing fall color early-ish September and it’s sooo cool when it mixes with the colors from the wildflowers.
Crowds tend to really clear out after Labor Day weekend giving you more privacy, even in the popular areas. Sunrise is no longer at 5 am, making those sunrise elopement wake up calls easier.
Weather does tend to get less predictable as you move later into September, so definitely lean into flexibility, and plan for everything. We’ve seen it all in late September, heat waves, rain, and even snow!
Road access to specific areas, like Artist Point closes off after the first big snow of the season, or by October 15th. You’ll still be able to access locations at lower elevations, as well as Picture Lake, Heather Meadows, and Bagley Lakes.
You can still hike to Artist Point, but it’ll be a significantly more strenuous experience.

The absolute worst time to be here. Elope in Olympic, or plan an Oregon Coast elopement instead if your heart is set on a spring elopement.

Spring: March-Early July

Winter: December - Early March

The downside is that it can get pretty crowded on great ski days and winter weather can be a little wild.

Snow central, baby! If you want winter wonderland vibes, skiing or snowshoeing adventures, and cozy snuggles in a chalet, Mount Baker is excellent!

Weather and seasonality play a large role in your Washington elopement experience, and not every location shines in every season. We'd NEVER tell you to elope in Mount Baker in the spring, for example (have we said that yet??).

More Mount Baker elopement tips

Still not sure on your season?

What if the weather is bad?

Mother Nature is gonna do whatever she wants, but if we’re being super honest with you, bad weather makes for some INSANE images and just adds another layer to the story, like in this Tipsoo Lake elopement where it absolutely poured.
Now, we’ve had to pivot plenty of times because of dangerous weather and wildfires, and have multiple locations and backup timelines that we can switch to.
We also never book elopements back to back, so that if weather is dangerous and a larger pivot is required, we can easily make it happen!

Here’s what we always bring in case the weather is moody:

  • Clear umbrellas for the two of you
  • Hand and body warmers
  • Lanterns (looks so freaking romantic when it’s cloudy)
  • Snacks
  • Privacy tent if you’re changing on site (gamechanger if it’s windy)

Here’s what you should pack for tricky weather:

  • Clear umbrellas for your guests
  • Fleece lined leggings if it’s chilly
  • Waterproof layers and warm outer layers you’d be stoked to be photographed in
  • Gloves/mittens
  • Change of socks

Dates to avoid
As locals, here are days where you should absolutely avoid eloping at Mount Baker:

  • Memorial Day: Too close to spring in the first place, but this is also the annual Ski to Sea race. The town is packed and the mountain is closed until noon.
  • Fourth of July and Labor Day Weekend: Still not guaranteed cute landscapes, but also, don’t come here on a holiday weekend.
  • Weekends through mid-September: There’s an annual uphill bike race and the mountian will be closed for sunrise elopements
  • October 15th - Spring: This really only pertains to Artist Point elopements and trails. Other areas are still open. But, the road to Artist point closes at the Bagley Lakes trailhead with the first big snow, or by this date.
  • Weekends in the winter: Crazy busy with skiing

Where to stay for your Mount Baker elopement and where to avoid

Best Area and Lodging Tips

Do NOT stay in Bellingham for your Mount Baker elopement. We know it seems like it’s not that far, but we pinky promise you, it’s gonna be 1.5-2 hours to get to any location from Bellingham.

To give you an idea of drive times, the closest airbnb to the Heather Meadows/Artist Point area is at least a 40 minute minute drive.

There are 3 residential communities in the Glacier area that are all either year-round, or seasonal rentals. This means you’ll have a ton of options when looking for lodging. If guests are joining you, they’ll likely be able to find a stay that is in the same neighborhood as you!

There's no shortage of incredible places to stay for your Mount Baker elopement in the Glacier area, but here's a round up of some of our faves!

Want more places to stay?

We've got some ideas!

  • Gunners Tex-Mex: At this point, they should sponsor us for how often we tell people to go here. We’re both from Texas, and our standards are high for both BBQ and Tex-Mex, Gunners checks all the boxes and has excellent margaritas (cucumber jalapeno is the best). Don’t skip on the mac and cheese, it’s the absolute best. Vegetarian options available!
  • Wake N Bakery: Amazing baked goods and coffee! Vibes are also excellent here and it’s really fun to grab a latte here in your wedding attire after your sunrise ceremony. Also a great spot if you’re wanting vegan or gluten free options.
  • Joe’s Coffee: EXCELLENT coffee and the home of Sam’s favorite veggie breakfast burrito. Also has a drive through, which we love.
  • North Fork Brewery: Our favorite pizza in the area and excellent beer. Their menu offers a lot more than just pizza, and everything is so good!
  • Chair 9: Laid back pizza and bar! It’s all yummy and the whiskey crab dip is superb. You can also rent out the upper portion for a celebration with guests, which is so fun because there are arcade games and pool tables!

Deming is a small area, and it really leans into those small mountain town vibes. Here are some of our favorite local spots to support:

Vendors for your Mount Baker elopement

Some couples want to add more elements to their elopement day experience, and some locations are so remote that logistics make it difficult to incorporate a lot of vendors. However, Mount Baker is not one of those locations. For couples looking to add vendors to their experience, you really have a ton of options since you’re so close to Bellingham and Seattle.

Elopement Officiants in Mount Baker

Having an officiant can be an excellent addition to your elopement ceremony. If you prefer to be led through a ceremony, booking an officiant can make your ceremony super special. We’re ordained and always thrilled to handle this for our couples, and happy to recommend others as well!

Hair and Make Up Artists

Tons of couples choose to hire a hair and makeup artist for their elopement day. Your HAMUA can offer up tips to keep your lewk fresh and hold up through all the adventures you have planned for your day. Here are a couple from our vendor list that we love! Need more recs? Holler at us!

Permits and getting legally married at Mount Baker

We've got good news for ya!

Honestly, both the permit situation and getting your Washington marriage license isn't as complicated as you may think! Here’s a quick overview:

 Permits

  • If your group is less than 75, you won’t need a permit.
  • If you have a larger group, or you're wanting to utilize chairs, you’ll submit a group gathering application (we’ll walk you through this, it’s v chill).
  • If your group is really big (like 50+) you’ll need a special use permit. Honestly, at this point, it would be best to utilize a group campground, a rental that allows events, or working with Camp Saturna or Red Mountain Lodge!
  • Certain group sizes (more than 12) are not allowed in wilderness areas. if your group is on the larger side, you’ll be encouraged to use picnic and pullout areas in the park.

Washington Marriage license

We’re ordained and walk our couples through this process when they become eligible to apply (60 days before your ceremony date)

The easiest sway to get your Washington marriage license is to apply by mail as early as possible. That way, you’ll receive your Washington marriage license and officiant packet before you even board the plane. This also helps to make sure you observe the mandatory 3 day waiting period.

Mount Baker Elopement FAQs

Can you bring your dog to your Mount Baker elopement?

  • Yes! Pups are welcome here! Be sure to follow B.A.R.K. principles and let us snuggle them! Dogs are allowed on just about every trail in the area, though there are a few exceptions.

Can we have live or seeded florals?

  • Nope! Seeded and live florals are not permitted in many of the areas in Mount Baker. We’d recommend opting for wooden or silk florals instead!

What kind of vehicle should we rent?

  • If you’re considering some 4x4 locations, or know you’ll be driving up some sketchy roads, get a high clearance 4x4 vehicle. If you plan on only checking out locations that are in the Artist Point/Heather Meadows area, the road is suitable for all vehicles.

Can we have a campfire when we elope at Mount Baker?

  • With the wildfire season growing in intensity and length each year, we’ll want to keep an eye on local burn bans. Typically, burn bans begin in early July and extend through early September (sometimes longer). However, many lodging options have propane fire pits, and that is totally fine!

Are there any venues that would work for a Mount Baker Micro Wedding?

  • Yes! If you need a larger, more private option for a ceremony with your crew our recommendation would be Camp Saturna or Red Mountain Lodge. You can roll lodging in with a ceremony venue, and have some private "just us" adventures up on the mountain.
