Considering a North Cascades elopement? We get it! An expansive stretch of landscape that feels like it’s been scooped out of a fairytale makes for an unbelievable backdrop.
Kyle and I have spent years traveling the Pacific Northwest in our lil’ house on wheels. While it’s hard to choose a favorite location, the North Cascades is hard to beat.
We have fallen deeply in love with this stretch of mountains. So much so, that we’re tempted to find a spot in the shadow of mount baker to call home.
It’s easy to understand why folks are drawn to the Cascades. The towering snowy peaks, the lush lower-elevation forests, the crystal clear alpine lakes, and the year-round recreational opportunities all make this area one of the most incredible to explore.
We come from a small (and flat) East Texas town, and were absolutely blown away by the magnitude of these peaks.
The unparalleled beauty and ruggedness of the Cascade Range is such a revenant place to exchange vows. Grounding in your commitment to another person while standing in a landscape carved by fire and glaciers-it feels holy.
And while the draw of a North Cascades elopement is undeniably enchanting, It’s crucial to blend the vision of your day with the practical aspects of planning an experience in the Cascade Range.
The challenge with planning a North Cascades elopement comes from separating your expectations with the reality of eloping in the wilderness. Going with the flow of the day becomes a lot easier when you know what to expect and have a solid plan.
Here, we’ll deep dive into all of the aspects of planning a North Cascades elopement. Our hope is that you’ll have all the insider knowledge you need to plan an unforgettable experience in one of the most wild corners of Washington State.
Expectation: Any wedding photographer can take gorgeous photos in the North Cascades.
Reality: NGL it is pretty hard to take a “bad” photo in this neck of the woods. If you want a day that feels equally wild as it does enchanting, the North Cascades is a great option.
But, choosing your Washington elopement photographer will make the biggest difference in not only how you experience your wedding day, but also the planning process.
There’s a lot more that goes into documenting your North Cascades Elopement than showing up and shooting. And for us, the creative process begins…honestly, during our first call where we get to hear your vision and help you plan.
We strongly recommend finding a photographer that ticks the following boxes.
Having an elopement photographer that delivers this level of service in an area as wild and unpredictable as the North Cascades truly makes all the difference.
Even in the summer months, when the weather is more predictable, we have had to help our couples pivot locations or timelines to accommodate wildfires, lightning storms, and road closures.
Expectation: A North Cascades Elopement is more suited for adventurous couples.
Reality: While it’s true that the North Cascades offers endless rugged, type 2 adventure, there are PLENTY of beautiful locations that are also easy to access.
If you want a day that feels equally wild as it does enchanting, the North Cascades is a great option.
Expectation: Elopement locations in the North Cascades all require intense hiking and the only views are mountains.
Reality:There are PLENTY of elopement locations in the north Cascades that are incredibly easy to access and you’ll have your pick of mountain views, wildflower meadows, wild rivers, lush forests, gorgeous lakes, and fire towers.
The North Cascade Range extends far beyond the National park borders, with some of the most stunning (and accessible) locations can be found in the surrounding national forests.
The landscapes of the North Cascades are diverse. Ranging from wildflower-filled valleys to staggering mountain views, there’s something for everyone in this corner of Washington.

Blue Lake | Moderate | ummmm picturing hiking to a sapphire-blue glacially fed lake through an old growth forest? This is the spot for you! We get it. The Cascades cover a lot of ground and it can be challenging to narrow it down to one area. So, let us help you break down the best locations based on some of the most requested scenery, and our personal experience.
Expectation:Every season will be ideal for a North Cascades elopement
Reality: Seasons are a lot different up in the mountains and each one presents its own challenges and benefits. What’s important is to consider your ideal day, expectations, and accessibility!
While the best season for a North Cascades elopement really does come down to personal preference, there are plenty of considerations to weigh, or at least, be aware of.
Here, we’ll break down the benefits and challenges you can expect with each season and what area is best suited for each! We’ll also offer up our own opinions because we can’t help ourselves!
Use this table of contents to jump around:
However, August-September is peak wildfire season, so you’ll want to really keep that in mind as you choose your locations. Typically, the eastern side sees more fires, but with fire season growing more intense, it’s a good idea to take caution, in general.
You’ll also see an uptick in visitors during these summer months, with July – Mid August seeing the largest crowds. To avoid the crowds, stick to sunrise/sunset, weekdays, and locations that are less popular.
Pro tip: Watch the weather and fire maps, and have a solid back up plan in case you need to quickly pivot. Be prepared to share the area with other folks, and stick to weekdays and quieter times of day!
Summer at a Glance
When it happens | Late June/July – early September |
Benefits | Incredible wildflowers, more predictable weather, and better views of the mountains. |
Challenges | Wildfires and crowds |
Fave areas | They’re all gorgeous in the summer, but if we HAD to choose, we’d pick Mount Baker! |
Late May is typically when the park starts to slowly open up. Highway 20 usually opens late May giving you access to some incredible spots, but know that they will still be covered in snow. You’ll want to be well aware of the conditions, read plenty of recent trail reports, and have any necessary gear (like snowshoes, trekking poles, and microspikes).
To be totally honest, the weather in the spring is very unpredictable and, in our opinion, isn’t the best season for a North Cascades elopement.
Pro tip: Check road and trail closures frequently! Have a solid backup plan and be prepared!
Spring at a Glance
When it happens | Late May-June |
Benefits | Fewer crowds |
Challenges | The weather is super unpredictable and many areas are still closed or inaccessible. HWY 20 typically stays closed until late May at the earliest. For dates where it has historically been open, go here. |
Fave areas | You’ll want to stick to the lower elevation areas and locations on HWY 20 up to Diablo Lake. Trails like Thunder Knob and Wenatchee Lake may be ideal locations for your spring North Cascades Elopement. |
Ohhhh babyyy fall in the North Cascades is freaking magical. The colors, the mood, the vibe. It’s awesome! If you love the idea of mountain views dusted with snow, with golden fall colors, and the chance of moody weather, then fall is an excellent time to plan your North Cascades elopement.
The earlier in the fall, the better chances for predictable weather you’ll have, and if you avoid labor day weekend, and peak Larch Madness, you’ll have considerably more privacy than the summer months provide.
As you get into mid-October, you can anticipate snow, obscured or foggy views, and some locations and roads will begin to close.
Pro tip: Try to avoid Larch madness if you’re hoping for privacy! Keep an eye on weather and road closures here.
Fall at a Glance
When it happens | Mid/late September – mid-October |
Benefits | Stunning colors |
Challenges | Weather is less predictable and crowds happen during Labor Day weekend and during Larch Madness |
Fave areas | Okanogan-Wenatchee is known for its fall colors and Mount Baker is also gorgeous |
If you’re dreaming of a winter wonderland backdrop for your elopement, then the North Cascades is perfect for ya! While MANY locations are inaccessible, there are some that you still explore if you’re interested in snowshoeing, skiing, or snowmobiling.
In fact, Mount Baker ski area draws plenty of folks throughout the winter months and is truly so stunning.
Pro tip: Be sure to have a ton of flexibility, be ready to pivot, and don’t opt for a winter North Cascades elopement unless you are down for winter activities.
Winter at a Glance
When it happens | Typically, many closures are in place by November. December usually sees the most snow, and February/March are pretty reliable powder months and see less crowds. |
Benefits | If you want snow and winter activities, you’ll find it here! |
Challenges | road closures and crummy weather |
Fave areas | 10000% Mount Baker or if you want to feel like you’re in a snow globe, Leavenworth! |
Where should you fly in?
What type of car rental do you need?
When should you book your lodging?
Pro North Cascades Elopement Tip: Stock up on groceries while you’re in Seattle or Bellingham. There are small grocery stores in the towns surrounding the parks, but they are limited. |
Expectation: You’ll be able to book the cutest lil cabin of your dreams super last minute.
Reality: You’ll want to book your lodging ASAP! While there are some realllllyyyy cute places to stay, they book up fast!
When you’re looking through different lodging options for your North Cascades elopement, you’ll want to be thoughtful about the process and prioritizing a few things.
Here are few considerations to keep in mind
Use this table of contents to hop around this section:
This area is our fave and where we typically live in the summer months! Deming, Maple Falls, and Glacier are all about 45 minutes from Bellingham, and about half an hour from the Artist Point area.
Outside of Bellingham, the area is pretty remote and a hub for outdoor enthusiasts year-round. There are a ton of super cute cabins and houses to choose from that would be a freakin’ dream to stay at.
Closest to | Mount Baker |
Distance from SEATAC | Roughly 3 hours |
Nearest large town | Bellingham (45 minutes west) |
This is the place to stay if you’re visiting the National Park! Marblemount sits at the gates of the park and is a cute, tiny town close to some incredible spots! It’s also not an unreasonable drive to some locations in Okanogan-Wenatchee at roughly an hour away.
Closest to | North Cascades National Park |
Distance from SEATAC | About 2 hours |
Nearest large town | Bellingham (roughly 1 hour) |
If you’re considering Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest for your North Cascades Elopement, Mazama is the town to stay! It’s less than 30 minutes from the Maple Pass area and a ton of other gorgeous areas.
Closest to | Okanogan-Wenatchee |
Distance from SEATAC | Roughly 4 hours |
Nearest large town | NGL there’s not a lot ‘round here. Stock up in Seattle! |
If you’re thinking of a location like Colchuck Lake or Lake Valhalla, you’ll want to stay in the Leavenworth area. Beautiful meadows, mountains, and lakes. Sounds pretty perfect to us!
Closest to | The Central Cascades + the Alpine Lake Wilderness |
Distance from SEATAC | About 2ish hours |
Nearest large town | While Leavenworth ist a “big town”, you’ll have everything you need in the area! |
Note: If you love German food as much as we do, you’re gonna LOVE Leavenworth!
Expectation:Your event is sooo low key that you don’t need a permit.
Reality: Even if you’re having a “just the two of us” elopement day, some areas may still require permits.
In some areas you need a permit in others you don’t, and in a few just your North Cascades Elopement photographer needs one. The permit process seems to be ever-evolving, so this is something that we aim to stay pretty up to date on with each elopement season. We’ll break down the permit process for the main areas to give you an idea of what to expect.
Typically, if it is just the two of ya, you don’t need a permit. However, you’ll need to fill out an event request form. Keep in mind that in the wilderness areas, group size is limited to 12 folks.
Here are some additional notes from the permitting office:
Another picnic area is the Douglas Fir campground picnic area which is managed by a private campground company and the company allows for reservations.
Similar to the considerations of Mount Baker (no seeded florals, small group size, etc.) For locations in the Okanogan-Wenatchee areas, your photographer will have to apply for a permit (as of 2024).
This may change in the future, but as of this year, photographers and videographers will have to have a commercial use permit.
While your photographer will not need a permit, you will need one if you plan on having your ceremony in the park. A special use permit is only needed for your elopement ceremony, not portraits.
Expectation: It’s a complicated process and the logistics will make your head spin.
Reality: It’s actually a super simple process and we’ll hold your hand through it!
You have a few options when it comes to your legal paperwork, so we’ll break those down first.
Related: Check out our guide to crafting a meaningful elopement ceremony.
Expectation: You can visit willy-nilly. It’s nature and there are no rules.
Reality: Each area has different rules and regulations to ensure the preservation of these beautiful areas.
We love public lands and know how important it is to Leave No Trace so that you’ll be able to visit the place you exchanged vows for decades to come. As adventure elopements gain popularity, putting the seven Leave No Trace principles at the forefront of the planning process is critical.
Expectation: Having guests will feel like herding cats
Reality: With the right preparation and considerations, having a few guests join you can be absolutely incredible and stress free.
If you are having your crew join you for your North Cascades elopement, keep in mind that you will need to keep your guest list super small. Many areas don’t allow for more than 12 folks total. Only invite those that will ENHANCE your day and are down for the adventure. Here are some tips on how to make including guests in your North Cascades elopement a breeze.
PRO TIP: Make your life easier: Hire us as your North Cascades Elopement Photographers! We create a custom guest guide for your day so you don’t have to worry about communicating all of this info with your crew! |

You can do ANYTHING you want during your North Cascades elopement, but here are some ideas to get you started!
Expectation: You don’t need a timeline and the day will just flow with ease.
Reality: A well-crafted timeline is what makes a North Cascades elopement flow seamlessly.
Having a timeline is critical for a stress free day. While an elopement timeline is wayyy more chill than a traditional wedding timeline, having some structure to your day prevents so much stress and ensures that you get to do everything you want to without feeling rushed.
Before we dive into timeline examples, let’s first talk about what you can expect throughout the day.
Happens the hour before sunrise and the light makes for some moody, cinematic images. You’ll also see the least amount of folks at this time of day. This is ideal for a morning hike, or getting ready for a sunrise ceremony!
Happens the hour after sunrise. This light is soft, golden, and is super flattering. Ideal for a private ceremony and portraits.
Between the hours after sunrise and before sunset. This lighting tends to be harsher and changes with the movement of the sun. This time of day is when you’ll see more folks out in the parks! This time of day is ideal for adventures, indoor elements of your day (like getting ready), Activities with guests, and your ceremony as you move into early evening. In the North Cascades, this time of day gets super warm, so keep that in mind as you plan your timeline!
Happens the hour before sunset. This lighting is golden, directional and cinematic. Similar to the a.m. golden hour, but you can expect it to be more directional, harsher, and have a more golden hue to it.
This happens the hour after sunset. This lighting makes for some moody, sweet, and creative images. TBH this is one of our favorite times to shoot! This time of day is ideal for campfire photos, a candlelit dinner, or star photos as you get further into the night.
